Mahama Assures Saglemi Housing Project Will See Major Construction Boost

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that construction work on the long-abandoned Saglemi Housing Project will significantly increase as the government moves to revive the development.

The President said the project is expected to undergo a major transformation, with the developer tasked to complete and commission hundreds of housing units within the coming months.

Speaking about the progress of the project, President Mahama pointed to a visual representation of the planned development and expressed confidence that the site would look substantially different when Ghanaians return to inspect it at the end of next year.

“You have seen the beautiful montage behind me. This is how it’s going to look when you come back at the end of next year,” the President said.

Under the government’s plans, the developer is expected to complete and commission 700 housing units by March next year, with the target rising to 1,500 completed housing units by December next year.

The announcement represents a renewed push to address the long-standing challenges surrounding the Saglemi Housing Project, which has remained largely unfinished for several years.

The project was originally intended to provide affordable housing for Ghanaians and ease pressure on the country’s housing deficit. However, its development became stalled, leaving several completed but unoccupied structures at the site.

The renewed construction programme is therefore expected to bring fresh activity to the project and provide additional housing opportunities once the units are completed and made available.

President Mahama’s assurance also signals the government’s intention to ensure that the significant investment already made in the project does not remain underutilised.

The Saglemi development has been the subject of considerable public discussion over the years, particularly regarding the unfinished nature of the project and the need to find a sustainable way to complete it.

The government’s latest plans seek to move the project from a largely dormant state into active construction and eventual occupation.

The target of 700 units by March would mark an important milestone if achieved, while the completion of 1,500 units by December would represent a much larger expansion of the project.

The planned construction is also expected to generate economic activity through the involvement of construction workers, suppliers, contractors and other businesses connected to the housing sector.

For communities around the Saglemi area, the revival of the project could also bring increased economic activity and infrastructure development.

Ghana continues to face a significant housing challenge, particularly in urban areas where demand for affordable accommodation remains high. The completion of additional housing units could therefore contribute to efforts to address some of these pressures.

The government’s focus on the Saglemi project comes amid broader efforts to improve access to housing and ensure that abandoned or stalled public projects are completed.

President Mahama’s comments suggest that the government expects the pace of construction to increase considerably as the project moves forward.

The timeline announced by the President places particular emphasis on measurable targets, with the first major milestone expected in March and a larger number of completed units targeted before the end of the following year.

If the targets are achieved, the transformation of Saglemi could provide a significant boost to Ghana’s housing stock and give new life to a project that has remained incomplete for years.

For now, attention will be on the developer and relevant government agencies to ensure that construction progresses according to schedule.

The President’s assurance has also raised expectations among Ghanaians who have followed the project’s long history and are waiting to see the development fully completed and put to use.

By December next year, the government expects the Saglemi site to have undergone a substantial transformation, with 1,500 housing units completed and ready for commissioning.
