The President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, is set to deliver an address to Ghanaians following his decisive victory in the 2024 Presidential Election.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024, officially declared Mr Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the president-elect.
As the returning officer, Jean Mensa announced that Mr. Mahama garnered 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast. The Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 4,657,304 votes, translating to 41.61%.
Prior to the announcement, Dr. Bawumia had conceded defeat barely less than twenty-four hours after polls closed as he said data he had received confirmed Mahama had won the election decisively.
He said his decision to concede defeat was to ease tension.
Mahama served as the President of Ghana from July 24, 2012, to January 7, 2017. He initially assumed office following the death of President John Evans Atta Mills and later won the 2012 presidential election. However, he lost his bid for re-election in the 2016, and 2020 general elections to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His re-election is historic, as he is the first former president of Ghana to be re-elected to the presidency, setting a significant precedent along with other notable records.
