Lionel Messi: Inter Miami star drops hint about retirement

Argentine megastar Lionel Messi has shed light on the conditions that will inform his decision to consider retirement from football.

The 8-time Ballon d’Or winner called time on his European career when he made a surprise move to the Major League Soccer last summer.

The 36-year-old has netted 16 goals and provided 7 assists in 19 appearances for Inter Miami since joining the David Beckham co-owned club.

Despite his remarkable performance since moving to the MLS, Messi has also battled with injury leading to concerns over how long he can continue in the sport.

Speaking on his future retirement, the former Barcelona ace disclosed that he assesses himself critically and will not hesitate to step aside when he feels he is no longer performing well or enjoying the game.

“I am very self-critical of myself, I know when I’m good, when I’m bad, when I play well and when I play badly. When I feel it’s time to take that step, I will take it without thinking about age,” Messi said.

“I know that moment I feel I am no longer ready to perform, that I am no longer enjoying myself or helping my teammates.”
