Leaked Tape Case: AG abandons case against Ofosu-Ampofo

The Attorney General has officially withdrawn all criminal charges against former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and the party’s Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen, according to a report by 3news.com.

The two NDC officials had been on trial over a leaked audio recording in which Ofosu-Ampofo was allegedly heard discussing plans to instigate crimes and create insecurity in the country, with the intent of blaming the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The recording reportedly outlined plans such as kidnappings, arson, and verbal attacks on key public figures, including the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Professor Emmanuel Asante; and Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

Both individuals were charged with conspiracy to cause harm, charges they denied.

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo was also facing trial for allegedly assaulting a public officer, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The case, which began in December 2019, has now been brought to a close with the Attorney General’s decision to abandon the prosecution.
