Land for Cape Coast Airport has already been acquired – Aviation Minister

Minister for Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda says the land required for the construction of the proposed airport in Cape Coast has been acquired.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the Minister stated that the land is situated between Komenda and Shama in the Central Region of Ghana.

However, the land upon which the airport will be constructed does not belong to the state.

He explained that the ownership rights of the land will be a “partnership” between the owners of the land and the State.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) at their recent manifesto launch promised the people of Cape Coast an airport in the region when re-elected into power.

This, according to Vice President, Dr Bawumia, was very critical in the support of what he described as one of the country’s major tourist and economic hubs.

“An airport makes a lot of sense in Cape Coast. It’s a real tourist hub and between Greater Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast you have a triangle that really is a hub for economic activities,” he said.

However, several aviation experts have criticized the idea and questioned the economic sense in siting an airport in the region.

According to one such expert, Dr Yakubu Akparibo, most of the conditions that would serve as a basis for the siting of such a facility in the Central Region are non-existent.
