Lack of funds threatens to derail Ghana beach soccer team for Cape Verde Games
The national Beach Soccer team of Ghana is in race against time as it appears they could miss out on the first Beach Sports tournament in the world.
Coordinator of the Black Sharks, Kusi Awere Gyamfi has said that it is unfortunate there is no sponsorship for beach soccer available at present and the association is trying its possible best to get a bail out at the last minute.
“We are on the verge of signing a new deal with our main sponsors CAL Bank after concluding contractual talks to extend their partnership with Beach Soccer for another 2 years”.
However, the contract is yet to be signed and this could be a major setback for beach soccer.
It would be recalled that in 2015 when the team first qualified for Beach Soccer AFCON in Seychelles, a similar situation occurred when no funding was made available but the association was able to mobilize funds and later got support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to compete in the competition where Ghana took the Goal King award and also beat the then African champions Senegal by 4 goals to 3.
The President of the association Yaw Ampofo Ankrah who happens to be the Chef du Mission for the SAL game was not immimmediat available for comment.
Meanwhile the Mr Kusi Awere has confirmed that they are working closely with GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah to mobilize funds from every possible source to enable the team compete at the games from the 17th to the 24th of June.
