Kwasi Appiah steers war-torn Sudan to frustrating draw with Senegal in World Cup qualifiers

In spite of their domestic turmoil back home, the Sudan national team, under the leadership of Ghanaian coach James Kwasi Appiah, impressed with resilience and grit by posting a goalless draw against Senegal in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game on Saturday.

The Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya, hosted the game during which Sudan secured their unbeaten streak and secured their position as leaders in Group B.

Playing away from home due to security concerns in Sudan, Appiah’s team defied the odds against a star-studded Senegalese side led by the likes of Sadio Mane.

The Falcons of Jediane posted a determined defensive performance, heaping woe on their more-fancied opponents with a well-organized shape and measured counterattacks.

Senegal, heavy favourites, dominated the game and created plenty of chances. However, Sudan’s solid defence and goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa’s heroics ensured the match ended in a stalemate.

The result keeps Sudan atop the group, proving that Appiah’s touch has transformed the team into serious contenders for historic World Cup qualification.

With this crucial draw, Sudan have now collected eleven points from five matches, giving their competitors a clear message.

As they march through their qualifying campaign, Appiah’s tactical wizardry and the team’s determination could see them do the unthinkable – qualify for their first-ever World Cup.
