Top nationalities that preferred France for Schengen Visa in 2024

France once again claimed the top spot as the most popular Schengen country for visa applicants in 2024. With more than 3 million applications submitted, the country experienced a 17% increase compared to the previous year. From North Africa to Southeast Asia, travellers across the globe seem to have their eyes set on the Eiffel Tower, the French Riviera, and beyond.

But what makes France so appealing? Language ties, historical connections, and strong diaspora communities all play a role. For many, France wasn’t just the most visited—it was often the only country they applied to visit.

Which Countries Sent the Most Visa Applications to France?

Among all Schengen countries, France led as the primary choice for millions. However, its popularity was especially prominent among applicants from specific countries, where a significant share of total Schengen visa applications were destined solely for France.

Here’s a breakdown of some key trends.

1. North African Countries Dominate

France drew an overwhelming number of applicants from countries like Algeria (65% of total visas), Tunisia (nearly 60%), and Morocco (almost 47%). These figures reflect strong historical and linguistic ties dating back to colonial times.

2. Sub-Saharan Africa Shows High Affinity for France

Over 90% of Schengen applications from GabonBenin, and Togo went to France. Similarly, more than 75% of visas from GuineaHaiti, and Ivory Coast targeted France. For many of these travellers, family ties, educational opportunities, or business relations drive visa preferences.

3. Southeast Asia and the Middle East Join In

While Vietnamese and Cambodian citizens had diversified destinations, France still received nearly 40% and 76% of their Schengen applications, respectively. Middle Eastern countries like Lebanon and Saudi Arabia also showed strong interest, with France receiving 42% and 38% of their applications.

4. Full Preference for France from Select Nations

In some smaller or developing nations, applicants showed exclusive interest in France. For example, 100% of visa applications from ComorosDjibouti, and the Central African Republic were submitted solely for France.

Residents in Visa-Free Nations Still Prefer France

Interestingly, many Schengen visa applications also came from foreign nationals living in visa-free countries. These residents, despite holding legal status in places like Canada or Singapore, still needed a visa to enter the Schengen zone.

France was the preferred destination in several of these countries:

  • United Kingdom: Out of nearly half a million applications, more than 132,000 were intended for France.
  • Canada: One-third of Schengen visa applications (14,520) were France-bound.
  • Japan and South Korea: Even among Asian tech hubs, thousands still aimed for the charm of France, with around 4,000 applications from Japan and 700+ from South Korea.

Surprisingly, all applications from places like Mauritius and Saint Lucia went exclusively to France, showing its cultural pull across even remote regions.

Why France? Key Reasons Behind the Surge

Several factors help explain France’s popularity among Schengen visa seekers:

  • Linguistic and Colonial Ties: French-speaking countries in Africa and Southeast Asia maintain close cultural bonds with France, influencing travel preferences.
  • Tourism Appeal: From Paris to Provence, France offers iconic destinations and experiences for all types of travellers.
  • Family and Community Links: Many applicants have relatives or long-established communities in France, making it a logical choice for visits.
  • Education and Business Opportunities: France remains a hub for students and entrepreneurs, particularly from developing countries.
