Daniel Asiedu, the Self-confessed killer of Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, the late Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa North Constituency has been referred to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for mental examination.

The order followed a request by his lawyer Augustine Obour on grounds that Aseidu’s claims that he wanted an ICC lawyer and his general utterances raise questions of his mental health.

According to the counsel, in the interest of justice and for fair trial, a scientific examination would be required to show he is sound and fit to stand trial.

Sefakor Batse, Senior State Attorney opposed to the oral application and said the accused person has not demonstrated any reason to believe that he is not mentally sound.

But the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice George Buadi, said the accused person’s claims that he does not trust a Ghanaian lawyer and his subsequent General utterances raise question of his mental health.

The court, however, directed the registrar of the court to write to the medical director of the Psychiatric Hospital by close of day Tuesday April 16, 2019.

The court said the order to the hospital must be delivered by hand.

The court also ordered the hospital to produce the report of Daniel Asiedu’s mental health on May 27.

The court also ordered the hospital to conduct the examination with conditioning it execution and performance upon payment.

This was after Chief Officer David Tuishitoo, the leader of the prison officers informed the court that the hospital demands consultation fee before the examination is conducted.

The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2019.
