Immigration officers arrest 2 self-confessed NDC coordinators with G3 rifles, ammunition at Sangba

Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service stationed at the Sangba Inland Checkpoint have reportedly arrested two men with weapons and ammunition.

According to a video shared by Ed Hub on X (Twitter), the suspects, identified as Matthew Balon and Nlibe Otanpi, were arrested by the officers in their attempt to get past the checkpoint with two German-made Heckler and Koch G3 assault rifles disassembled in a box.

Also contained in the box, which was being carried by the men riding on two separate motorcycles, was ammunition of about 30 rounds.

The two had initially sought to bribe the officers with GHC20. However, they attempted to flee the scene upon the officers’ insistence to inspect the contents of the box.

They were subsequently arrested after being given a hot chase by the gallant officers.

During interrogation, as captured in the video, Balon Matthew, who claimed to be an area coordinator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gave two different explanations for how they acquired the weapons.

He initially stated that they purchased the weapons from a military man, with each rifle costing GHS 25,000, but later claimed they obtained the weapons from his uncle in Accra.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service are yet to issue an official statement on the incident reported to have occurred on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
