Napoli manager Antonio Conte has apologised to Victor Osimhen following the controversies surrounding his move away from the Naples-based club.
Osimhen has been a subject of transfer speculation all summer, as he was expected to leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium despite extending his contract with the club last December.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year was expected to join either Chelsea or Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli on transfer deadline day, but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour leading to a strained relationship between the player and the club.
The 25-year-old was subsequently expunged from the first team and stripped off his iconic number 9 shirt, which was handed to Romelu Lukaku.
Conte stated that any player who is not part of the current squad will not be reinstated into the team.
The Super Eagles star ultimately secured a season-long loan move to Galatasaray on Tuesday, September 3.
Reacting to the issues surrounding Osimhen’s departure, The Cult of Calcio reports that the former Spurs and Chelsea manager has apologized for what unfolded leading to player’s exit.
“Some issues blocked it; perhaps if we had unlocked that [Osimhen] situation, we would have completed the team differently and earlier
“I’m sorry about what happened. I’m sorry for Osimhen. I’m sorry for the club that didn’t monetize.
“I am sorry for myself because we didn’t complete the team as we wanted, but the club proved to be consistent in this situation.
“Coherence is the starting point when it comes to respecting the rules. The club proved consistent, so I praise them for this attitude.”
