Mr Umar Yasir, an executive of the Mallam Kataki branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawase Constituency has served notice that he will sue the largest opposition party in court over its refusal to allow Mr Mubarick Masawudu to contest in the party’s parliamentary primaries.

He accused the national executives of the party, including the General Secretary Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia of scheming to ensure that Muntaka Mubarak, the current Member of Parliament for Asawase, goes unopposed.

On Thursday, 18 July 2019, Mr Masawudu was locked out of the party’s regional officer together with his supporters when they went there to file his nomination.

They party insists he cannot be part of the process because he is under suspension.

Speaking to Accra News on Friday, 19 July 2019, a livid Umar Yasir said the electoral processes have been shrouded in secrecy with all manner of moves being employed to ensure the incumbent MP goes solo.

In his opinion, if this situation is allowed to go on, it will further deepen the cracks within the NDC in the constituency.

“I will sue the party and place an injunction on the elections,” he said, adding: “We cannot allow this to happen to our party.”

He added: “This issue is being spearheaded by the General Secretary of the party, Mr Asiedu Nketia, who wants Muntaka to go unopposed.

“The point is, if you know you have worked hard for the interest of the party and the constituency, why are you afraid of a contest?

“As far as we are concerned, Muntaka has failed and it showed in the last elections. John Mahama performed better than Muntaka, so, that tells he hasn’t been the best for us.”
