‘I was arrested because of my picture on Facebook’ – Suspected kidnapper tells court

One of the eight persons suspected to be part of the gang that kidnapped the two Canadian women in Kumasi has told the Accra High Court that he was arrested because of his picture on Facebook.

During his appearance in courtTuesday, Safianu Abubakari denied being part of the gang and explained that he was arrested because he took a picture with Yusif Yakubu, one of the accused persons.

“I was arrested because the police saw my picture with Yusif on Facebook, he told the court.

The prosecutor, Ms Hilda Craig, Senior State Attorney, had earlier told the court that Safianu was a close pal of Yakubu.

She explained that although the police had granted him bail, he was re-arrested after investigations showed that he knew more than he had told the police.

Remand

Another suspect- Abdul Rahman Suleiman, the owner of the car that was allegedly used for the kidnapping was also put before the court today.

The two have been charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

The court, presided over by Justice George Buadi, remanded the two into the custody of Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), following a plea by the prosecutor that investigations were still ongoing.
