History: This female Ghanaian-British just won parliamentary seat in UK

Abena Oppong-Asare of the labour party has been elected as the next MP for Erith and Thamesmead.

She follows the footsteps of her male colleagues Adam Afriyie, Sam Philip Gyimah, and Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng.

Abena makes history as the first female Ghanaian-British MP in the UK.

She grabbed the seat after winning the seat with 48 per cent of the votes and a majority of 3,758.

It was declared early on Friday morning that Ms Oppong-Asare will become the new Labour MP for the constituency after she received 19,882 votes.

Joe Robertson the Conservative candidate was second on election night, receiving 16,124 votes.

Brexit Party candidate Tom Bright with 2,246 votes and Liberal Democrat Sam Webber with 1,984 votes followed respectively.

The Green Party candidate Claudine Letsae won 876 votes, whilst Richard Mitchell of Christian Peoples Alliance received 272.

Labour’s Teresa Pearce was the constituency’s long-standing MP, winning the seat in the last three elections, but she stepped down ahead of the 2019 General Election.

Turnout was 63.3 per cent.

Abena Oppong-Asare is a former Bexley councillor who served as a ward representative for four years until 2018.
