Here is why Accra is trending

Accra, Ghana’s capital, and the country’s most important economic and political center, has come under the spotlight for the wrong reasons following hours-long rainfalls on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, 2025, in parts of the country.
The Sunday downpour especially, which lasted for nearly four hours, resulted in the submergence of several areas in the capital, causing significant damages to properties and leaving many homes flooded.
Notable among the damages are video footages showing severe flooding in estates around East Legon Hills, Pantang, Adenta, and surrounding areas — locations often regarded as prime residential zones with high-priced properties, leaving residents displaced from their homes.
Some netizens have expressed outrage, attributing the perennial flooding to poor city planning and the construction of buildings on waterways by real estate developers.
They argue that desilting choked gutters cannot provide a lasting solution to the flooding problem, calling on the government to take drastic measures, including preventing the construction of buildings in waterways and drainage channels.
On the other hand, some netizens have shared the view that the flooding of homes in prime areas, including estates like East Legon Hills and Pantang, is an indication that the high prices charged by estate agents — particularly those quoted in foreign currencies — are not justified.
Meanwhile, others have also lamented how the issue of perennial flooding recurs with every rainfall, yet little to no action appears to be taken, expressing skepticism that the situation will likely be repeated in the coming years.

Anytime Accra floods, I realize there’s no land or house in Accra worth $10k or $100k
Overrated and overpriced city kai— Beno SarkCess (@BenopaOnyx1) May 18, 2025
We need a permanent/lasting solution to the seemingly perennial flooding of Accra.

No amount of gutter cleaning will stop Accra from flooding. The whole city has been poorly planned.

In Accra, almost every gutter sits right in front of a house or shop yet they’re constantly choked with filth, and the occupants look the other way. This negligence is a major cause of flooding.

Accra needs re-planning or decongestion to fix the flooding situation.

Anyone who thinks Greater Accra’s flooding problem is as a result of waste clogging drains clearly is clueless on the massive engineering lapse and the urban planning deficit we have.

When you build in swamps and dried rivers, you must have large canals. Not gutters o. Canals because Accra is a valley and when it rains, the rivers will return. Every year, same story. pic.twitter.com/WIDwQFu1VA

Ghanaians are the main cause of the Accra flooding, but I will blame the leaders since they don’t want to be proactive and sanction people for bad habits.
If we continue to be nonchalant and dirty, Accra will not stop flooding.
BE A GOOD CITIZEN. 🤝🏾

If Accra is going to fix its flooding problem, a lot of rich people in “powerful” positions will lose their multi-million-dollar homes and properties. And since that isn’t going to happen anytime soon, people might just get lifeboats and jackets for the yearly disasters ahead.

when we are angry at our politicians, you must understand the frustration. we have prioritized the wrong things for a long while. must Accra flood everytime it rains? how don’t we have answers and solutions? what damage is needed to show that this is urgent and needs a look-in?

You go buy land $10K+ for Accra then when it rains you’ll realize that land should rather be $1K.
Accra is too hyped.

Every year Accra floods, every year nothing is done about it by the authorities. Every year we act surprised. See you next year.
