Here are four Ghanaian artistes whose album releases were the talk of town

Being able to produce and release an album as an artiste is an achievement on its own.

But having fans and potential fans listen to your album and talk about it for days on end is even better. (Whether for the right or wrong reasons) is a big deal.

In recent years, several Ghanaian album releases have generated significant anticipation and media attention before and after their release.

Here are some notable examples of artistes whose albums have been the talk of the town, specifically for their international impact and social media retention after their release.

Sarkodie:

In 2010, Sarkodie made records as the first artiste to win the ‘Discovery of the Year,’ ‘Artiste of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’ in his first appearance at the Ghana Music Awards. All thanks to his debut album ‘Makye’, which was released in 2009.

Since then, the rapper has made a name for himself with notable album releases featuring several local and international acts.

In 2013, “Sarkology,” Sarkodie’s third studio album, was accompanied by a major release concert at the Accra Sports Stadium, drawing over 15,000 attendees.

In 2024, Sarkodie released “The Championship,” a project that sparked a major beef between rappers in both Ghana and Nigeria. The pre-released song “BRAG” initiated a response from Nigerian rapper Dremo. Prompting retaliation from various Ghanaian rappers, including Lyrical Joe and others.

King Promise:

In 2019, King Promise made headlines after his debut ‘As Promised’ album became the most-streamed song on Spotify of all time.

In 2023, his 5 Star album won Album of the Year at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

His 2023 album, ‘True to Self,’ was an international hit, with songs like ‘Terminator’ becoming a social media hit and surpassing 200 million streams across major platforms.

This was followed by a world tour, which saw sold-out shows across Asia and Europe.

Stonebwoy

No stranger to awards, Stonebwoy’s first album ‘Grade 1’ propelled the Reggae/Dancehall artiste to the limelight with the hit track “Climax,” featuring Samini, being one of the hits that earned him nominations at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013.

His subsequent albums, including ‘Anloga Junction’ and ‘Epistles of Mama’ featured various hits which solidified his presence in the music industry.

But in 2023, Stonebwoy’s ‘5th Dimension’ album was a standout. Consisting of various hits, the album was followed by a world tour which climaxed with a massive (and controversial) event at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2023.

Black Sherif:

After his smash hit ‘Second Sermon,’ the young rapper from Konongo turned heads with his debut album, ‘The Villain I Never Was’ in 2022.

The album featured hits like ‘Kweku the Traveller,’ ‘45’ and ‘Soldier Soldier’ which bagged Black Sherif the Artiste of the Year and Album of the Year awards at the 2023 TGMAs.

Black Sherif’s Zama Disco concerts also helped etch the album in the sands of time. Proving that an album can have enough impact no matter how long ago it was released.

After teasing fans for more than two years, Black Sherif is finally out with his second album, ‘Iron Boy,’ which was released on April 2, 2025.

The album has been the talk of social media, especially with a particular song, “Where Then Boyz”, which many on social media are speculating as a diss song towards another artiste.
