Good to see my dismissed Electoral Commissioner’ – Mahama as swears in Charlotte Osei, others to Constitution Review C’ttee

President John Mahama, on January 30, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony of the eight-member committee he established to review the country’s 1992 constitution, caused laughter with his description of former Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei.

Charlotte, who is among the committee members to review the constitution, was described as the dismissed Electoral Commissioner amid laughter by the president at the Jubilee House.

“Good to see my old teacher Professor Karikari and my friend Kusi, my dismissed Electoral Commissioner Charlotte… and all of you. You are very welcome,” Mahama said amid laughter while administering the oath of secrecy to the committee members.

At a ceremony held at the Jubilee House, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, stated, “You have been carefully selected for this important work on behalf of our country.

“The easier part of the job is to follow the prescribed method for altering the constitution. The more challenging aspect, and I can say this without fear of contradiction, is to recommend substantive provisions to add to or replace elements of the current constitution.”

President Mahama stated that the move to review the constitution is recognition of the country’s progress.

“The call for constitutional reform is not an admission of failure, but an acknowledgment of progress, a recognition that our democracy must be dynamic, responsive, and ever attuned to the needs of our people.”

The committee’s membership includes: Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman, Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member, Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member, Mrs. Charlotte Osei – Member, Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Member, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member, Dr. Esi Ansah – Member, Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary.
