The National Identification Authority over the past 5 years started registering eligible Ghanaians for the acquisition of the Ghana Card.

During the exercise, a lot of Ghanaians most especially those in the Urban centers queued in their numbers to get registered and acquire the Ghana Card.

Also Ghanaians in the rural areas were also given the chance to register and acquire the Ghana Card. During the registration, the applicants went through a biometric screening; all the ten fingers were captured and a passport sized photograph was also taken.

In addition, the following information was obtained from the applicants ;

Applicant’s full name, Date of birth, place of birth, nationality, sex, father’s name, mother’s name, next of kin, GPS address among others.

The reason of requesting for all these information is to enable the system identify a Ghanaian citizen in a unique way. All these was done with a purpose which is why I am writing this article.

The good news is that, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority, Professor Kenneth Attaffuah on Monday July 12 disclosed in an interview with an Accra based FM, Asaase Radio that, the Ghana Card will soon replace the Passport which all Ghanaians who is having the Ghana Card can use to travel to any part of the world.

He said; ” We had a very beautiful meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Friday, we are talking about the modalities of getting two things done.”

” One is the onboarding of the Passport data integration with the Passport office, and also on how we can get to use the Ghana Card to travel.” He added.

He continued that, ” the conversation with we had with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is on how to get an appropriate certification and the International Standardization Organization Certificate and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) certificate, so that the Ghana Card itself can be a valid passport for travel to the European and American countries.”

There are plans underway to get all Ghanaians living abroad registered to acquire the Ghana Card.
