Husband commits suicide hours after wedding

The wedding reception for Swadiku Abbas (50) and his new wife Elieth Rwegashora (40), who live on Zenze Street in Kiseke, Ilemela, Mwanza, Tanzania, turned into a funeral after the groom reportedly killed himself a few hours before the ceremony.

The Tanzanian Police said in a statement that went out to the media on Saturday that the incident happened on December 17, 2022, after the couple had said their wedding vows at the Swadikul Amiin Mosque.

Wilbroad Mutafungwa, the head of the Mwanza Regional Police, said that the ceremony, which was supposed to take place at Mtena B Hall, was cut short because most of the guests, who were family and friends, were already there and sitting down.

“After getting married on December 17, the couple who had been living together was supposed to host their guests at Mtena B Hall, but as of 10:00 p.m., the groom still hadn’t shown up, and that’s when the groom’s family started to worry,” the RPC said.

He also said that they found out around 11:45 that Swadiku Abbas had killed himself in his house by hanging himself. When the police got to the scene, they found a note that is being used to help with the investigation.

He didn’t say anything about the note they found on the body of the dead person. Commander Mtafungwa said that the body of the person who died was kept at Sekou Toure Hospital so that the cause of death could be looked into further.
