GII backs martin amidu’s outburst
Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has commended Special Prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu for publicly expressed frustration over lack of resources and support he receives from the government to deliver his mandate.
According to Programs Manager of GII, Mary Adda some people are facing similar challenges in the government institutions but they have kept quiet, situation she said hindering the fight against corruption.
“I suspect that one of the things we can do for ourselves as a country is to have people like that who can speak the truth, many people are not happy but they have kept quiet so it is commendable that Martin Amidu is taking his case on” she said.
Speaking in an interview with thepressradio.com on Friday, September 28, 2018, Madam Adda stated that President Akuffo Addo has taken a bold decision for fulfilled his promise of created the office of the Special Prosecutor and appointed Martin Amidu to head the office in order to fight against corruption in the country, however,.
“The issues is not just about promising and fulfilling the promise, after the promise you need to resourced the institution in order to deliver the mandate given to the institution as Martin Amidu has indicated” she added.
Mr Maidu has claimed ministers have refused to offer him the kind of support he requires to be able to deliver on his mandate.
“The present situation where critical ministries and agencies have failed even with our limited constraints or refused to produce public records on demand to aid the office in critical investigations, offences running into millions of cedis, clearly demonstrates that there is divergence between the president’s vision and that of some of his appointees.
“You ask for information you can’t get it, you ask for docket, the docket cannot be produced. You ask a minister for a record, the record cannot be produced. How do you fight corruption when those appointed by the president who has a vision are not coordinating with the office of the special prosecutor to achieve his mandate? That is the challenge we have to face,” the anti-corruption crusader bemoaned at a National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service in Accra.
This, according to Mary Adda is worried and therefore called on the government to provide the needed resources for him to win the fight against corruption.
