GHC54m judgment debt hits Ghana Railway
Ghana Railway Company Limited is on the verge of losing some of its properties in Sekondi in the Western Region after a High Court hit it with a GHC54 million judgement debt.
Ghana Railway Company Limited in 2006 laid off about 674 workers without recourse to due process.
The workers who were not pleased with the layoff filed a suit against Ghana Railway Company Limited in September 2010 after all alternative dispute resolution strategies had been exhausted.
Ghana Railway Company subsequently failed to settle these workers even after both the High and Appeal Courts ruled the case in favour of the aggrieved workers against the government which has accrued into a Judgment debt of GHC 54million.
The Sekondi High Court presided over by her Ladyship Sophia AB Akuffo, on Friday ruled that some properties of the Ghana Railway Company Limited be auctioned to make up for the GHC54 million judgement debt.
The order prohibits Ghana Railway Company Limited from alienating the property by sale, gift, or in any other way. The general public is hereby prohibited from receiving the said property as gift, by purchase or otherwise.
