Ghana becomes 5th African country to offer visa-free travel for African passport holders

Ghana has officially become the fifth African country to grant visa-free travel to holders of African passports, effective January 1, 2025.

Outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made this announcement during his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, January 4, 2025.

“I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, effective from the beginning of this year,” he declared.

The policy aims to strengthen continental integration and aligns seamlessly with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Touching on its significance, the President stated, “This is the logical next step for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the workings of the largest trading bloc in the world. All these are essential elements for the realization of the AU’s Agenda 2063, which envisions an integrated and connected Africa by 2063.”

By implementing this initiative, Ghana joins Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin in facilitating seamless travel within the continent.

The move is also expected to promote tourism, trade, and investment while enhancing Ghana’s position as a champion of African unity and cooperation.

The policy further complements Ghana’s role as the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat, emphasizing its dedication to advancing Africa’s economic and political integration.

By easing mobility for African travelers, the visa-free policy also reinforces Ghana’s leadership in promoting a connected and collaborative continent, paving the way for an integrated African future.
