Four individuals invited for probe over death of Nigerian boxer

The invitation marks the commencement of an inquiry led by a seven-member committee established to probe the tragic incident.

In a letter sighted by GhanaWeb, the individuals invited include Alhaji Toufiq Muritala, Chairman of the Promotion Committee; Isaac Amankwah, a leading member of Ace Power Promotions; Mr. Gordon Frimpong, a member of Osebo Promotions; and Fadi Fattal, a member of Imax Promotions.

The quartet, per the letter, is scheduled to appear before the committee on Thursday, April 10, in the conference room of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Sector minister Kofi Adams announced the appointment of a seven-member committee to investigate Olanrewaju’s death on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The committee comprises Amb. Major (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio, Peter Zwennes Esq., Ekow Asmah, Samuel Bartels Esq., Eddie Pappoe, Juliana Addo-Yobo Esq. (Secretary), and Dr Martin Engmann.

The ministry has given the committee 21 days to compile a comprehensive report on their findings.

The committee has been tasked with investigating five key areas as part of the ministry’s efforts to bring closure to the incident.

Their tasks include investigating the circumstances that led to Olanrewaju’s death, assessing the security and safety measures implemented by the event’s organizers and promoters, determining whether the boxer received proper clearance from the Nigeria Boxing Authority for the bout, evaluating the conduct of officials during and after the incident and providing recommendations for medical procedures at boxing events.

Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically passed away after collapsing during a fight in Ghana.

He was later pronounced dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Olanrewaju collapsed during his bout against Ghana’s John Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
