A former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad has stated that the social media app TikTok has caused more harm than good to the security of Nigeria.

The former aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari stated in a post on X that the video and photo-sharing app is being used by criminals to target and threaten the lives and security of citizens in the country.

He claims that many criminal groups, such as bandits, kidnappers, terrorists, and fraudsters, use the app to communicate with each other.

In his statement, he urged the Federal Government to implement stricter regulations to monitor the content created on the app, thus ensuring the safety of the country.

In his words; ”It is alarming that TikTok, a global social media platform, is being utilized by criminals such as bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists in Nigeria to interact with the public and, in some cases, even engage in live conversations defending their heinous activities. The platform is causing more harm than good to our country, as it not only amplifies the voices of these criminals but also emboldens them by providing a space to spread their propaganda and misinformation.”

“Nigeria needs stricter regulations and content monitoring on TikTok to prevent those dangerous individuals from using it for their malicious agendas.”
