Former Asante Kotoko star named Ethiopian Premier League Player of the Year

Midfielder Umar Bashiru has been honored as the 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League Player of the Year.

He was unable to attend the ceremony as he was in Tanzania with his Ethiopia Nigd Bank team for their CAF Champions League match against Young Africans.

Bashiru outperformed competitors including his teammate Fetuhdin Abdul Karim, Chernet Gugsa of Bahir Dar FC, and Kenean Makenen of Defence Force FC.

Other nominees included Shemeles of Defence Force FC, Ali Suleman from Hawasa City FC, and Biniam Woleyta of Dicha FC.

Bashiru had an impressive season, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 30 appearances.

The former Asante Kotoko, WAFA, and Karela FC midfielder is currently in his second season with Ethiopia Nigd Bank.
