#FixTheCountry plans May 1 protest over galamsey concerns – Barker-Vormawor

He stated that the demonstration, scheduled for May 1, 2025, will see concerned Ghanaians taking to the streets to express their displeasure with how the government is addressing the galamsey issue.

According to the activist, since President John Dramani Mahama assumed office, he has not presented a clear roadmap to combat the menace, unlike the detailed plans laid out for other sectors during the 2024 election campaign.

“It’s been four months. The level of seriousness the government has shown in other areas makes us believe that a clear strategy to tackle galamsey should have already been unveiled.

“For us, the reason we’re mobilising back to the streets is to remind the government that this is a serious and urgent issue,” he told Joy FM on April 6, 2025.

Barker-Vormawor called on Ghanaians to turn out in large numbers to make their grievances known regarding illegal mining.

“This goes beyond our daily bread or the comfort of fraternising with ministers we admire. Let’s show up and hold the government accountable for addressing the problems we face,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr Murtala Mohammed, has stated that the government is in the process of amending the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003 to ban illegal mining in forest areas.
