FG congratulates Trump on inauguration, Tinubu silent

Nigeria has congratulated President Donald Trump on his successful inauguration as the 47th President of the United States of America.

According to the Acting Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria and the US have enjoyed cooperation in diverse areas of mutual interest, especially in promoting good governance, sustainable development, and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

Ebienfa stated that Nigeria looks “forward to further strengthening our historic, strong, and vibrant strategic partnership for the benefit of all our people.”

No message from Tinubu

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu is yet to personally issue a congratulatory message to Trump more than 24 hours since the inauguration in Washington.

MyNigeria scanned through the social media pages of the President but couldn’t find any message in the last few days related to Trump.

Also, the social media pages of the three Presidential Spokespersons are without any message congratulating the new US President.

Avoid confronting Trump

Meanwhile, a foremost Professor of Political Science, Bolaji Akinyemi, has advised Tinubu to avoid confrontation with Trump.

“If I were President Tinubu, I would try to steer clear of antagonising him because there is nothing a bully likes better than taking on people who are not strong enough to resist him,” Akinyemi said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday.

“You know there is that African proverb that if you are not strong enough to take on a bully and you take him on, you are just even going to suffer more for it.

“That’s the advice I will give President Tinubu: try and avoid having a confrontation with him even if that means that he does things that annoy or does things that step on the interests of Nigeria. There are ways in which you could address his reaction without confrontation,” he said.
