Ewurabena Aubynn to be sworn in today as MP for Ablekuma North

Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be sworn into office today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
Her swearing-in follows a dramatic and historic rerun election on July 11, in which she narrowly defeated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, by just 209 votes.
Aubynn garnered 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881, sealing victory across all 281 polling stations.
This win represents a significant breakthrough for the NDC, which had never previously won the Ablekuma North seat since the constituency’s creation.
The rerun was organized by the Electoral Commission after unresolved collation and verification issues marred the original results of the December 2024 general elections.
Although the NPP initially declared a boycott of the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie opted to participate, stating her duty to protect her mandate following the dismissal of her injunction application by the Accra High Court.
The outcome not only ends prolonged political uncertainty in the area but also signals a major shift in voter sentiment in what was traditionally considered a stronghold of the ruling NPP.
