‘Dumsor’ riot: 6 caged in prison

A magistrate court in Somanya in the Eastern region has remanded six persons into prison custody in connection with the protest over incessant power outages in the Krobo enclave.

The suspects, who are residents of Nuaso and Somanya, were rounded up by the police in their attempt to allegedly attack the Power Distribution Services (PDS) office in Somanya.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to charges of rioting and causing damage when they appeared before the court.

The magistrate, Frank Gbegby, remanded the six to reappear on April, 12 after DSP Akwasi Yeboah, the prosecutor failed in his plea to the court to extend the remand period to two weeks.

At least two people sustained gunshot wounds after angry residents of Nuaso in lower Manya Krobo, last Wednesday evening, blocked the main Kpong to Odumase road, and burnt tyres to prevent cars from moving on that stretch.

Police officers from Somanya and Akropong, who were detailed to restore calm, allegedly opened fire on the demonstrators who were suspected to be on their way to attack the local office of PDS in Somanya, injuring two in the process.
