Driver’s mate jailed 10 years for possessing Marijuana

A 20-year-old driver’s mate has been jailed for 10 years for possessing marijuana.

Baba Mohammed, was arrested on the 19th January 2016 after the Ashaiman Divisional Police Command conducted a swoop to flush out persons peddling in narcotics at the VALCO flat area within the Ashaiman Municipality.

Delivering the judgment, the Presiding Judge of the Ashaiman Circuit Court, Mr Gabriel Mate-Teye, said the accused person did not show remorse in court.

He further explained that, pursuant to section 2(1) of the Narcotic drugs enforcement and sanctions Act (PNDC law 236/900), it was unlawful to possess illicit drugs without legal authorization.

The prosecuting officer, Superintendent Fliayance Senam Adika, stated in his evidence, which was read to the court by the judge that, the convicted person was arrested when the divisional commander ordered his men to carry out a swoop at ‘Spider Toilet’ near Valco Flats in the Ashaiman municipality.

According to Superintendent Fliayance Senam Adika, the convicted person was arrested after a fierce resistance, after which a “margarine tin” full of marijuana was found on him.

The convicted person told the court that the substance was to be used for bitters for his personal consumption and therefore pleaded guilty for the offence.
