Dispute Erupts Over GBA’s $3,000 Donation to Late Nigerian Boxer’s Family

A sombre act of goodwill has reportedly turned into a family dispute, as the widow of late Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju claims she has not received a $3,000 donation from the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).
Maria Adebusola Olanrewaju, the boxer’s widow, has publicly stated that her husband’s family members are “fighting over the $3,000 donated by the entourage from Ghana.” Speaking to Accra-based Sporty FM, she lamented, “The money is yet to be given to me.”
According to Mrs. Olanrewaju, immediately after her husband’s body was received in Nigeria, his family allegedly prevented her from performing traditional rites and denied her and her children access to the proceedings.
The GBA had handed over the $3,000 to the family when its delegation repatriated the remains of the late boxer to his ancestral home in Nigeria.
Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically passed away in Ghana after collapsing at the Bukom Boxing Arena during a fight with Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu. An autopsy report later confirmed that the Nigerian boxer died of cardiac arrest.
The ongoing dispute casts a shadow over what was intended to be a compassionate gesture by the GBA to support the bereaved family during a difficult time.
