Some supporters of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (M4C) stormed the Ministries Police Station on May 22, 2024, to demand the release of Hopeson Adorye, a key member of the movement.

The protest was ignited by what the supporters allege to be a politically motivated arrest.

One of the supporters captured on camera, vehemently defending Adorye, questioned the legality of his detention and hinted at political interference.

“Are we still in military rule or civilian rule? What is democracy about? We are here today; we are going to sleep with Hopeson Adorye here.

“If they are detaining Hopeson, then they have to detain every supporter of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen,” she said.

She claimed that the government is attempting to silence Adorye to prevent further revelations that could damage the party’s reputation.

“Hopeson has been detained because he supports Alan Kyerematen and is revealing the NPP’s dirty deals that were used to gain power; we all know who is behind these instructions from above,” she added.

Hopeson Adorye, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was detained following his controversial remarks during an interview on Accra FM on May 10, 2024.

In the interview, Adorye confessed to participating in a plan to intimidate voters in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold of the Volta Region during the December 2016 elections.

He admitted that dynamite blasts were used to scare voters, thus reducing voter turnout and contributing to the NPP’s electoral victory.

Following these admissions, Adorye was arrested on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, and is currently assisting the police with investigations.
