DCOP Lydia Donkor reveals fresh and shocking details about Pooley’s death

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor, who has been tasked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to lead investigations into the tragic stabbing of Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, has revealed that the Asante Kotoko fan was stabbed outside the stadium during the violent clash that led to his death on Sunday, February 2,2025.

Her statement contradicts initial reports suggesting the incident occurred within the match venue.

Speaking to JoySports, the Chairperson of the GFA’s Security Committee shed new light on the circumstances surrounding the attack, providing a step-by-step account of what transpired while emphasizing that strict security measures were in place at the stadium.

“This unfortunate incident did not happen inside the stadium. It happened outside, and he was later picked up by a tricycle and dropped at that section of the stadium.

“I have to clarify this because there are all kinds of comments suggesting the police allowed someone to enter the stadium with a knife. Let me state that the police enforce a strict search regime,” she said.

Addressing reports of a longstanding feud between the deceased and some Nsoatreman fans, DCOP Donkor noted that Pooley could have sought police protection if he had felt threatened.

“The best advice I can give is that if he had any genuine concerns about threats to his life, he could have approached the police or informed someone in the area so that we would be aware,” she added.

With the Ghana Police Service having arrested six suspects so far, investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
