Legendary Highlife musician Daddy Lumba has received royal recognition as his song Mpempem Do Me is featured in King Charles III’s special playlist for Commonwealth Day.

The playlist, curated in collaboration with Apple Music, highlights songs that bring the British monarch joy and make it “incredibly hard to sit still.”

Daddy Lumba’s 2008 hit sits at number seven on the 17-track selection, alongside songs from global icons such as Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Bob Marley, Grace Jones, and Davido.

The King’s inclusion of Mpempem Do Me reflects his appreciation for diverse musical cultures and aims to resonate with people across the Commonwealth.

Uploaded to Daddy Lumba’s official YouTube page four years ago, the song has already garnered over 1.4 million views, underscoring its lasting appeal. Through its lyrics, he acknowledges both admirers and critics but remains focused on the love and appreciation he receives.

As a pioneer of Highlife music, Daddy Lumba is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, boasting an impressive catalog of about 34 albums.

His music career began at the age of 16 in a church choir before forming the Lumba Brothers band and later embarking on a highly successful solo journey.

This recognition from King Charles III further cements Daddy Lumba’s influence beyond Ghana, highlighting the global impact of his music.
