Couple, two others held for narcotics supply

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a couple and two others, for allegedly supplying a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Abraham Nortey, 59, and the wife, Victoria Oku, 46, as well as Elorm Kwaku, 24, have been charged for supplying narcotic drugs without authority while Wilfred Lamptey, 22, was arraigned for possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Their pleas were not taken and they will re-appear on September 10.

The docket has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for advice.

Inspector Samuel Ahiabor briefing the Court, presided over by Madam Afi Agbanu-Kudormor, said Nortey and Elorm are masons, whereas Oku and Lamptey are trader and driver respectively. They all reside at Pokuase in Accra.

On August 9, this year, the Ghana Police Directorate Intelligence had a tip-off that a man and his wife were selling Indian hemp at Mayra in the Greater Accra.

Inspector Ahiabor said the police moved to the scene and arrested the couple and Elorm. A quantity of the dried leaves was seized from them.

Lamptey was later arrested in the course of the swoop and a search on him revealed four wrappers of the dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

They were subsequently handed over to the Police Regional Criminal Investigative Department (CID), Accra.

After investigation, they were processed and put before the Court.
