Leaders of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have presented a petition to the Chancellor of university, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to stop the conversion of the two all-male halls into mixed-gender halls.

The petition was presented by students and alumni of the two halls, led by Mr Kankam Kwarteng, spokesperson for the aggrieved students and alumni, on Friday 17 August 2018 at the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region.

Clad in their hall colours – red and black (Conti), and; yellow and black (Katanga), the petitioners marched through the principal streets of Kumasi amidst chanting of war songs to express their displeasure at the university authorities for converting the halls.

They splashed the Vice-Chancellor’s posters on coffins with the inscription: “RIP Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso”, while others carried placards, some of which read, “V.C. you are a liar”, “Build more halls”, “Otumfuo, the god of KNUST say no to Conti and Katanga mixed halls”, and “Nana Addo, remember your promise”.

Mr Kwarteng said the proposed conversion of the halls to make room for the admission of more female students, is extremely short-sighted and bound to fail.

He said the conversion of the halls would have dire consequences on students, alumni and associates of the halls and tertiary education at large.

He, therefore, pleaded with the Asantehene to stop the authorities.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the Asantehene was Baffour Kwame Kusi, Otumfuo’s Ankobeahene.

Mr Kusi, after receiving the petition, promised to deliver it to Otumfuo for the necessary attention.
