Ghanaians clash with Nigerians after Ademola Lookman win CAF Player of the Year

Some Ghanaians and Nigerians on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), engaged in heated debates after Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman won the 2024 CAF Player of the Year Award on Monday, December 16, 2024.

The controversy was sparked when a Nigerian user claimed superiority over Ghana in football, music, food, and vibes, ending their tweet with the provocative question, “What did we leave for Ghana?”

The statement triggered a wave of responses from Ghanaians, who flooded the comment section to list things they believe make Ghana better than Nigeria.

Ghanaians mentioned peaceful elections, stable electricity, a stable economy, and others.

The rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria extends beyond football and encompasses other aspects of life, including food, entertainment, and cultural pride.

Ademola Lookman clinched the 2024 CAF Player of the Year Award after a sensational season, sending the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON final and winning the Europa League with Atalanta where he scored a hat-trick in the final.

He beat PSG and Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi, Ivory Coast and Brighton & Hove Albion forward Simon Adingra, and South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns to claim the prestigious award.

His victory marks a second consecutive win for Nigeria in the award category, following Victor Osimhen’s triumph in 2023. This is the second time Nigeria has achieved this feat since 1997.
