Chereponi clashes: DCE welcomes Yaa Naa’s intervention

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Chereponi, Tahiru Abdul-Razak says he has requested a temporary military base in the area to ensure peace prevails in the town.

“For the future strategy of tackling of any more trouble, I have personally requested for a temporary military base for the district,” he said on Eyewitness News on Thursday.

Tensions have heightened in the town following renewed clashes between two ethnic groups –Konkombas and Anufuls– which left three people dead and several others displaced after their homes were razed.

Efforts put in place to forestall peace seem not to be effective.

The overlord of the Dagbon state, Yaa Naa Abukari II on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with the Paramount Chiefs of the Konkombas and Anufuls, as well as the District Chief Executives of Saboba and Chereponi, over the issue.

A statement issued after the meeting called for peace between the feuding factions.

Chereponi DCE, Tahiru Abdul-Razak on Eyewitness News said the Yaa Naa’s intervention was necessary.

“Yaa Naa called on us to talk to us about peace because Chereponi and Samoba are under his jurisdiction and as the overload of the region he has to intervene,” he said.

According to him the courtesy call from Naa Yaa wasn’t because there was any progress in keeping the peace or calm but the invitation from was customary because he is the overload of the region.

He said the area has adequate security with both policemen and soldiers being deployed to the areas both day and night.

He also dispelled the rumours of people fleeing to Togo for safety.

On Sunday, March 17, there was an attack between some Chekosi communities in the Chereponi district of the North East Region which led to three deaths

Other persons sustained various injuries as several houses and other properties were destroyed in the tensions between Chokosis (Anufuls) and Kokonbas.

The violence started on Friday evening when unknown assailants opened fire on Nawieku, a Chokosi community in the district, injuring one person.

The following day, 75 military personnel and 40 police officers were deployed to the area following reported reprisal attacks.

Some students of the Chereponi Senior High School fled the school premises following clashes in the town.

Eight arrests have so far been made after the violence.

Police have also called on the leaders of both Anuful and Konkombas to talk to their people and call them to order.
