Charkieh Plastics Factory Devastated by Massive Fire at Weija Junction

A massive fire engulfed the Charkieh Plastics and Packaging Factory at Weija Junction on November 22, 2025, destroying the 40-year-old facility and prompting an urgent response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
At least seven fire tenders from different stations in Greater Accra and the Central Region were deployed to battle the blaze, which involved highly flammable plastic materials and produced dense, toxic smoke. Despite their efforts, the fire completely destroyed the factory’s infrastructure, including essential machinery such as six washing machines and two recycling units, crippling the company’s operations.
The factory, which has employed workers for decades—some for over 33 years—also provided on-site accommodation for staff. The fire’s aftermath raises serious concerns about both job losses and the welfare of employees who lived on the premises.
The factory manager lamented the loss, describing it as “beyond imagination”, emphasizing the emotional and financial toll on workers and the business alike. Authorities have warned residents to stay clear of Weija Junction while the fire service continues its containment efforts.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with officials expected to assess the full economic, environmental, and social impact of the disaster.
