Carlos Queiroz Reportedly Demanded Changes to Black Stars Backroom Team Before Contract Renewal
Carlos Queiroz reportedly requested changes to the Black Stars’ backroom team as part of negotiations over a new contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The Portuguese coach was initially appointed to lead Ghana’s senior national team on a short-term basis ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after replacing Otto Addo.
According to reports, discussions over extending Queiroz’s stay involved several conditions, including his desire to have greater control over the composition of the technical team supporting him.
The reported demand was for additional members to be brought into the Black Stars’ backroom setup, with foreign technical personnel said to be part of the coach’s plans.
The issue reportedly formed part of broader negotiations between Queiroz and the GFA as the two sides considered the future of the national team following the World Cup.
Earlier reports had also suggested that financial terms were among the issues discussed during negotiations, with figures reportedly circulating around the Portuguese coach’s proposed salary and the costs associated with his technical team.
However, the GFA later confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Queiroz for him to continue as head coach of the Black Stars.
In an announcement dated September 2, 2026, the GFA said Queiroz had agreed to take charge of the team for the next phase of its programme.
The football governing body said his previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the recently concluded World Cup, had ended a few weeks earlier before discussions began over a new coaching mandate.
The GFA also stated that the new arrangement was reached following discussions with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The confirmation ended uncertainty over whether Queiroz would remain in charge of the national team, particularly as Ghana prepared for its next international assignments.
The Portuguese coach brings extensive international experience to the position and has previously managed several national teams and clubs during his coaching career.
His continuation comes as the Black Stars prepare for the next phase of their international programme, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia for the qualifiers.
While reports surrounding the contract negotiations highlighted Queiroz’s reported desire to influence the composition of his backroom team, the GFA has officially confirmed that the coach will continue in his role.
