Burna Boy shades South Africans after announcement of Miss South Africa

Grammy award-winning singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, caused a commotion on social media with a remark he made about the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant.

The self-proclaimed African giant voiced his displeasure and criticized the pageant after Mia le Roux, a woman of European descent, was crowned the new Miss South Africa.

Burna Boy made his statements following controversies surrounding previous finalist Chidimma Adetshina’s forced resignation due to citizenship difficulties.

Sharing a photo of the crowned Miss South Africa, Burna Boy wrote, “So After ALL that” with laughing emojis.

Social media users and Burna Boy believed that the contest was a missed opportunity to promote African beauty and culture.

Burna Boy’s criticism of the Miss South Africa organizers and winners sparked a contentious discussion over identity, representation, and the value of advancing African culture.

Recall that the 23-year-old Soweto, South Africa, law student attracted a lot of attention when she declared her intention to resign, citing worries for her family’s safety and well-being.

Her decision was made in response to allegations by the Home Affairs Department of South Africa after an investigation that Adetshina’s mother may have engaged in “identity theft” to acquire South African citizenship.

Chidimma declared on August 8, 2024, that she was quitting the Miss South Africa contest due to concerns about her family’s safety.
