Buduburam: Government sets up committee to investigate fatal rock-blasting incident

The government has established a five-member committee to investigate the rock-blasting accident at Buduburam in the Central Region that claimed three lives and left several others injured.

The Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan, revealed this in an interview, stating that the committee will be chaired by Solomon Darko Quarm, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Gomoa East.

Other members include representatives from the traditional authorities, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), and the Ghana Police Service.

According to the Minister, the committee’s responsibilities include assessing the situation and recommending appropriate compensation for the affected residents.

“The committee will tour the community, identify all affected victims—not just those injured or deceased, but also those whose properties were damaged,” she explained.

She added that the government, in collaboration with Nag Fairmont Construction Company, has already settled the medical bills for the injured victims.

Madam Assan also praised the swift response of the Ghana Police, NADMO, and local chiefs in managing the situation.

She further commended the youth of Buduburam for maintaining calm and not resorting to violence against the workers involved in the blasting operation.

The tragic accident occurred on Monday afternoon during a rock-blasting operation along the Buduburam section of the Accra-Winneba highway, as part of a construction project by Nag Fairmont.
