Borussia Dortmund sack Sahin, name Tullberg interim manager

German side Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following the disappointing 2-1 defeat in the UEFA Champions League at FC Bologna on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s loss was the fourth in a row, leaving the club with no faith in Sahin’s managerial capabilities.

Sahin’s sacking was announced in a statement on the club’s website on Wednesday.

Lars Ricken, BVB’s sports director, stressed: “We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together. After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best,” says Nuri Sahin.

Following the sacking of Sahin, Borussia Dortmund named Mike Tullberg to temporarily sit on the coaching bench next Saturday against SV Werder Bremen.

The 39-year-old has been BVB’s U19 coach since 2020 and previously coached the Black and Yellows’ U23 team for a year.
