The Bono Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a 66-year-old woman and her 29-year-old son in connection with the alleged possession of narcotic and restricted substances at Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region.
The suspects have been identified as Mary Awuni, 66, and her son, Maxwell Akukah, 29. They were arrested during an intelligence-led operation at Kumi Daa Street, a suburb of the Dormaa Central Municipality.
According to the police, the operation was part of intensified efforts to clamp down on the possession and distribution of narcotic substances in the region.
During a search of the suspects’ rooms, officers reportedly recovered 147 yellow compressed slabs suspected to be Indian hemp, along with assorted Tramadol products and 14 blister packs of Rohypnol.
Police also reported recovering a total of GH¢87,751 and CFA 2,000 during the operation.
The authorities said GH¢72,612 and CFA 2,000, together with the suspected Rohypnol, were found in a metal trunk in Mary Awuni’s room.
According to the police account, Awuni told investigators that the drugs and money had allegedly been given to her by a man in Accra for onward delivery to another person in Côte d’Ivoire. Police also said she admitted ownership of the items found in her room.
Her son, Maxwell Akukah, was arrested in another room where officers reportedly discovered the suspected Indian hemp, assorted Tramadol and GH¢15,139.
Akukah, according to the police, denied ownership of the items found in his room and claimed they belonged to his brother, Anthony, who was reportedly outside Dormaa Ahenkro when the operation took place.
The arrests and seizure have since triggered further investigations as police work to establish the source, ownership and intended destination of the suspected substances and cash.
The two suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators with the ongoing case.
The Bono Regional Police Command has indicated that investigations will continue and that anyone found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with Ghanaian law.
The latest operation forms part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies to tackle the trafficking and possession of narcotic and restricted substances across communities in the Bono Region.
The police have also urged members of the public to provide credible information about suspected drug-related activities in their communities, stressing that public cooperation is important in efforts to combat narcotics-related offences.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the seized substances and money remain under investigation, and the suspects are yet to be convicted of any offence.
