A collection of vintage luxury vehicles reportedly linked to some of Ghana’s former presidents has attracted public attention after a video showing the cars in an old garage surfaced online.
The footage shows several vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce models, reportedly associated with Ghana’s political history. Many of the cars appear to have remained unused for an extended period, with dust and signs of neglect visible on their exteriors.
The video was reportedly shared by a concerned Ghanaian who expressed disappointment over the condition of the vehicles and appealed for steps to be taken to preserve them.
According to the man featured in the video, some of the vehicles are believed to have been used by former political leaders, including Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He argued that the cars have historical importance and should therefore not be left to deteriorate.
During the tour of the facility, the man opened one of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles and showed its interior. Despite the apparent neglect and accumulation of dust, parts of the interior, including the seats and dashboard, appeared to remain relatively intact.
He suggested that with proper cleaning and restoration, some of the vehicles could potentially be preserved and displayed for the public.
The footage also showed other vehicles parked within the same facility, including additional Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce cars. Their current ownership and the complete history of each vehicle, however, have not been independently established.
The video has generated discussion about the preservation of historical items connected to Ghana’s political and national heritage.
The individual who recorded the footage called on the authorities to consider restoring the vehicles and possibly placing them in a museum where members of the public could learn about their history.
He argued that preserving such vehicles would allow younger generations to see physical items associated with important periods in Ghana’s history rather than allowing them to disappear through neglect.
The condition of the vehicles has also renewed broader conversations about the preservation of historical property in Ghana. Some historic vehicles connected to the country’s political past have previously been reported to have suffered from prolonged exposure and inadequate maintenance.
A Mercedes-Benz reportedly used by Dr Kwame Nkrumah after Ghana’s independence was, for example, reported years ago to have been kept at the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board in Adabraka while awaiting rehabilitation.
The latest video has therefore prompted renewed interest in how vehicles and other items associated with former national leaders are being preserved.
While the claims about the identity and history of every vehicle shown in the footage have not been officially confirmed, the discussion has highlighted the potential historical value of the collection.
For the concerned citizen who filmed the vehicles, restoring them could provide an opportunity to preserve an important part of Ghana’s history for future generations.
