Bawumia pays tribute to fallen media practitioners, states commitment to press freedom

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has paid glowing tributes to media practitioners for their committed, yet risky service to the country.

In a touching move, just before the start of his engagement with the media in Accra on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia asked the audience to rise and pay a minute’s silence to media personal who have passed, especially in the line of duty.

“Your job is very important to sustaining our democracy, but it is also a very difficult job,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“Sometimes in the process of doing your work, you even lose your life,” he added as he he called for a minute’s silence for those who have died.

Following the observation of minute silence, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the impact of journalists in the country and the need to protect them and enhance their jobs.

He reiterated his commitment to protecting journalists and enhancing their practice to ensure they continue to be key players in our democratic dispensation.

The Vice President also expressed gratitude to the media for responding massively to his invitation, despite the short notice.

“The notice was short but you have responded. I’m particularly excited that media are represented from the 16 regions of our country.”

‘I am particularly grateful that you are here to listen to me and ask critical questions on Nour manifesto.

“The media plays an important role in our democratic process and those seeking to lead must be prepared to partner the media to ensure accountability.”
