Barkly Pass in the Eastern Cape has been closed to traffic following heavy snowfall that has created dangerous driving conditions in the mountainous area.
The closure forms part of wider disruptions caused by a powerful winter weather system affecting parts of South Africa, with heavy snow reported across high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape. Several major mountain passes have been closed as authorities respond to hazardous road conditions.
Barkly Pass, which forms part of the R58 route, is among the affected routes. The pass is an important link through the mountainous region, but heavy snow and icy conditions can make the road extremely dangerous for motorists.

Motorists are being urged not to attempt to drive through closed mountain passes, even if they have four-wheel-drive vehicles. Snow and ice can significantly reduce tyre grip and visibility, increasing the risk of vehicles losing control or becoming stranded.
