Ban importation of poultry products – Government challenged

Chief Executive officer for Nectar Farms Mr Thomas Adom is calling for the imposition of a ban on the importation of poultry products into the country. According to him, governments endorsement of the forgoing is adversely affecting the patronage of the local content and causing several poultry farmers to run at a loss. The importation of maize, frozen chicken and poultry feed according to the CEO has caused several Ghanaians to loose interest in buying those that are locally produced by farmers.

Mr Thomas Adom made this statement following the current skyrocketing market prices of maize.

The scarcity of maize he indicated has happened because government has until now failed to come out policies to will encourage the growth of maize in the country due to his over reliance the importation of poultry products.

The recent shortage of maize in the country  he indicated has compelled  poultry farmers to  mechanically dry maize to feed birds adding that the situation  is  affecting the industry  and therefore called on the Ministry of Agriculture to institute pragmatic measures to unrest the situation.

Mr Thomas Adom expressed deep worry over why the leadership of the country has hitherto not been able to come out with a national policy that will discourage importation of poultry and for that matter agric produce as done by other African countries.

“The shortage of maize has reduced production  drastically due to lack of  enough feed for birds…I used to produced over 7,000 eggs daily but now  I hardly produce 3,000. We spend so much to produce less as a result of high prices of maize. A bag (50kg) of maize which used to be sold at GHC 55.00, is now sold at the price of GHC90.00.” he  lamented.
