Bagbin Sends Afenyo-Markin to Privileges Committee Over Alleged Misconduct

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has referred Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee, following concerns that his recent actions in Parliament may have breached the rules governing the House. The referral, which was formally announced during proceedings, signals the Speaker’s stance that the alleged conduct is serious enough to warrant an independent investigation by the committee responsible for upholding parliamentary discipline.

Although the Speaker did not go into full detail about the specific behaviour at issue, referrals of this nature are typically triggered by acts that are considered disrespectful, disruptive, or potentially injurious to the credibility of Parliament. In previous cases, MPs have been sent before the Privileges Committee for statements considered unparliamentary, refusing to comply with procedural instructions, or conduct that undermines the authority of the Speaker.

By directing the matter to the Privileges Committee, Bagbin has effectively opened a formal process that will allow both scrutiny of the allegations and an opportunity for Afenyo-Markin to respond. The committee will investigate the complaint, listen to evidence, question the parties involved, and ultimately present recommendations to the full House. Possible outcomes could range from no sanctions to reprimand, apology, or even more serious penalties, depending on the committee’s findings.

The referral is attracting significant public attention, given Afenyo-Markin’s position as Minority Leader and one of Parliament’s most visible figures. Some observers view Bagbin’s decision as an effort to reinforce parliamentary discipline at a time when tensions between leadership on both sides of the House have been rising. Others see it as a signal that the Speaker intends to apply House rules consistently, irrespective of party ranking or political influence.

The development adds a fresh layer of drama to an already charged parliamentary environment. As the Privileges Committee prepares to begin its work, many will be watching closely to see how the process unfolds and what impact the outcome may have on parliamentary leadership dynamics, cooperation across the aisle, and the general tone of future debates in the House.
