Baba Rahman Urges GFA to Strategically Revamp Ghana Premier League

Black Stars defender and PAOK left-back, Baba Rahman, has made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), calling for a more strategic and deliberate approach to the planning and management of the Ghana Premier League. Rahman believes that with the right attention and direction, Ghana’s domestic league possesses the inherent potential to rival some of Africa’s top football competitions.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Rahman emphasized that the current challenges facing the league are not due to a shortage of talent. “The challenges in our league aren’t due to a lack of talent — there are genuinely good players competing,” he stated. He firmly believes that the domestic league holds immense promise and could achieve significant glory if fundamental improvements are implemented.
Rahman, whose own career saw him make a direct transfer from Ghana Premier League side Dreams FC to German Bundesliga club SpVgg Greuther Fürth in 2012, speaks from a position of experience regarding the transition from local to international football. He reiterated his conviction that the Ghana Premier League has the capacity to compete with the continent’s best.
The seasoned defender directly attributed the league’s struggles to poor organization and inadequate planning. “The real problem lies in planning and organization. Improving these areas is crucial to attracting fans and helping our clubs perform better,” Rahman asserted.
His candid comments come amidst ongoing struggles for Ghanaian clubs in CAF interclub competitions. While Medeama SC’s achievement in reaching the group stages of the CAF Champions League in 2023 was a notable highlight, it also underscored the significant hurdles and the overall decline in competitiveness faced by Ghanaian clubs on the continental stage. Rahman’s call adds to a growing chorus of voices advocating for comprehensive reforms to elevate the standard and appeal of the Ghana Premier League.
